County of Hawaiʻi Mayor Mitch Roth has proclaimed April 2024 as National Fair Housing Month.
This year marks the 56th Anniversary of the passage of the Fair Housing Act, a landmark civil rights law signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968. The theme of this year’s Fair Housing Month is “Fair Housing: The Act in Action.”
The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in housing because of race, color, national origin, religion, sex (including gender identity and sexual orientation/expression), disability, and familial status. The State of Hawaiʻi has enacted additional protections prohibiting discrimination on the basis of marital status, ancestry, age, HIV infection, or use of housing assistance (Section 8) programs.
Mayor Mitch Roth’s proclamation (VIEW HERE) encourages all landlords, Realtors, resident managers, property managers, and the public to commit to provide or advocate for equal housing opportunities for all.
In celebration of National Fair Housing Month, the County of Hawaiʻi, in partnership with the City and County of Honoululu, County of Kauaʻi, County of Maui, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Hawaiʻi Civil Rights Commission, and the Legal Aid Society of Hawaiʻi will be conducting a statewide virtual housing conference called “Fair Housing: The ‘ACT’ in Action” from 10 a.m. to noon every Thursday throughout the month of April.
