Hawaii State Identification Cards are available at any of the Vehicle Registration & Licensing offices.
You are allowed to hold one (1) Real ID compliant credential. You may elect to designate your Hawaii State Identification card as the Real ID compliant (star) credential but you must surrender your Real ID compliant driver license or instruction permit and apply for a limited purpose driver license or instruction permit.
State Identification cards are valid for 8 years. The cost for a new or renewal is $40. For non-immigrants, your expiration date is dependent on your admit to date. The fee is $5 per year or fraction thereof.
Effective January 02, 2013, anyone applying for any original or renewal of their Hawaii State Identification Card must present original or certified documentary proof of:
- Legal name
- Date of birth
- Social security number- (effective June 18, 2021, presenting documentation is optional.)
- Legal presence and
- Proof of principal residence address
The application of a minor applicant under the age of 18 must include a signature from a parent or by another individual in loco parentis of the minor who can provide proof of guardianship. A certified copy of the minor’s birth certificate is required to verify name of parent.

Requirements for a Duplicate State Identification
You may apply for a duplicate state identification if you are changing your name or address; do not have you identification in your possession (lost/stolen) or your identification card is damaged. You must appear in person and present your identification card or if you have lost or damaged your card, you must provide 2 identifiable documents (i.e. social security card and birth certificate).
- Complete and print the State Identification Application for duplicate.
- For name changes, present acceptable documents for name change (certified marriage certificate, certified divorce decree, certified name change document).
- For address changes present two (2) proof of principal residence address. If your post office box is your mailing address, you must also provide a document with your physical address listed.
The fee for a duplicate identification card is $6. You must apply in person to make a material change on your identification card.
Address Change by Mail
To change the address on your state identification by mail, please fill out the Change of Address Form then print, sign and mail the form to the below address.
Mail in two (2) acceptable documents addressed to you at your new address. If your post office box is your mailing address, you must also provide a document with your physical address listed. The address change will be on your record only.

Your original expiration date will remain the same. If you are eligible for a renewal (six months prior to expiration) we recommend you apply for a renewal instead of a duplicate identification. See the "Acceptable Document List" for a listing of all acceptable documents.
