Beginning December 1, 2021 driver's license that expired March 16, 2020 through November 30, 2021 is considered expired and is not valid to drive. 

If your driver's license expired during this period (3/16/20 through 11/30/21) you are eligible to reactivate your driver's license status.  A 90-day grace period starting on December 1, 2021 will be applied.  The last day to renew with no additional fees is February 28, 2022.  A $5 fee will be assessed for every 30 day period up to 1 year thereafter.  Any driver who has not reactivated their license status by the reactivation end date will need to apply as a new applicant.  New applicants must take a written test.  Upon successfully passing the written test, an instruction permit will be issued which allows you to drive with a licensed driver that is at least 21 years of age.  Once you pass the road test, a driver's license will be issued.  The reactivation period ends November 30, 2022.

If you are registering a trailer for the first time, please contact our office for additional assistance.  We are currently out of trailer plates and waiting for our order to be delivered.  Please provide us with your name and contact number.  We will contact you as soon as our shipment arrives.  A failed safety inspection is required prior to registration but we ask that you not safety inspect the trailer until plates are received.

The seller should provide you with the current registration for the trailer.  At the bottom of this registration, the seller should sign on the line which states "signature of owner above releasing interest".  Buyer will complete item #3 and #4.  If you wish, you may mail the registration with a check in the amount of $5 made payable to "County Director of Finance", Vehicle Registration & Licensing, 101 Pauahi Street, Suite 5, Hilo, HI  96720.

Vehicle Registration offices are currently opened.  Vehicles that have been shipped in from the mainland are required to be safety inspected prior to registration. Your vehicle will  "fail" safety inspection for "registration" only.  Please bring this document to our office along with your shipping documents, current out of state registration.

The Hilo Motor Vehicle Registration office located at 101 Pauahi Street, Suite 5 will be open for "walk in" services beginning April 18, 2022.  No appointments will be available from April 18, 2022 and on.

To remove your vehicle from storage "status", we require a safety check inspection.  The safety inspection will be "Failed" for registration only.  The safety inspection is valid for only 30 days, please obtain the safety inspection prior to your appointment.  Bring this with you.  To schedule an appointment.
